Should My Baby’s Nursery Have A Ceiling Fan?

Putting a ceiling fan in your nursery not only elevates the style of the space, but researchers have found that it could help your baby sleep safer!

According to this study by the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers discovered that having a fan running while the baby is asleep will reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) by 72 percent.

A pediatric nurse at the St. Louis Children’s Hospital published an article on helping infants sleep safely. One piece of advice included leaving a ceiling fan on in their room to continuously circulate air – and prevent the baby from overheating! While we’re not scientific researchers or doctors, we can tell you that when it comes to home design and choosing the perfect fan for your baby nursery, we have a lot of insights.

When you decide it’s time to check the “prepare a room for baby” box, the first thing you’ll need to do is deep clean the space and renovate any required areas like trim, window sealing, etc. Then it’s time for the fun stuff! See how you can get your infant’s nursery prepared and safe for their homecoming with our baby room decor tips and ceiling fan recommendations!

Determine Your Nursey’s Theme or Aesthetic

When it comes to design for your nursery, you’ll have to decide, “does this space have its own style? Or does it need to match the rest of your home?”

Mirroring similar design elements will make your nursery feel cohesive; however, giving your baby’s room its own style will allow it to stand on its own! Establishing your nursery’s style plan is critical – this space is where you’ll spend a lot of time! Neither direction is wrong; it all depends on your home and your goals for the space!

Rustic Farmhouse + Modern Farmhouse

If you’re aboard the farmhouse home décor train, you should consider continuing that style into your nursery! This style comes from country life, simple, rustic, elegant, and pieces that will last the test of time. It has a cozy heritage feel – exactly how you want your nursery to feel. Our Barn Metal Windmill Ceiling Fan, handmade with rust-accented blades, would pull a room in this style together effortlessly.

Utilizing a neutral color palette like the creams and blue hues of our Navajo Wool Windmill Ceiling Fan is another way to give your nursery a farmhouse feel. This color palette with shades of creams and blue would also lend to a coastal, coastal farmhouse coastal style. Incorporating blues, greens, and yellows for a pop of color that stays with the farmhouse look! We’d recommend the Patina Copper and Weathered Texas Turquoise finishes; these both are fantastic rustic fans for a farmhouse rustic-inspired nursery.

Landscapes + Prints Rustic

If you’re after more of a texture and lush greenery, southwestern landscapes or prints are one way to achieve a vibrant element in your nursery but in a more mature way that they can grow into as they grow. Our Weathered Rust Gray with Patina Bronze Tips and our Rawhide finish make a bold statement and bring something new and exciting for your little one to look at and be intrigued by.

Bohemian

Accent pieces in your nursery like pillows, curtains, and rugs with prints are a great way to bring a bohemian flair into your baby’s room. You can’t forget to include the mind-molding vibrant artwork ( accent western cowhide photos here), and greenery will create a well-styled, dynamic space.

The blade finishes and texturized design of the Weathered Antique White finish add a Bohemian element to eclectic and scenic nurseries.

Plus, with Windmill Ceiling Fans, you can add lighting elements, and the fan can be remote-controlled for your convenience.  We spent a lot of time designing the right lighting kit for our 18-blade Windmill Ceiling Fans. This lighting kit can be added to any size and custom finish. (150 Watt)

Why design THIS lighting kit and not the traditional hanging light?

  1. We did not want to take away from the gorgeous design and look your ceiling would have with lights hanging down.
  2. Having the lights on the top will illuminate the ceiling creating a unique glow on your ceiling.
  3. Lighting on the top eliminates the typical strobe effect on your ceiling if the lights were hanging below.  As a reminder, we have 18-blade Windmill Ceiling Fans.

The unique light fixture on the Windmill Ceiling Fan brings function and personality to this perfect finishing touch in your nursery design.

Soft Modern

The Soft modern style is so popular because it is transitional and playful, so it can grow and change as your child grows and changes! Your modern nursery design can easily be organized to fit your own design aesthetic. Designing a child’s space can be hard to navigate if your personal or home-style leans toward the minimal side of life.

However, this effortless aesthetic gives you the bandwidth to add modern fixtures and details and different colors and change up the feel and texture of this space. Fill your space with comforts to help your infant thrive, and bring a clean design with as little clutter as possible for yourself!

Our Modern style ceiling fans, like the Brushed Metal or the Rustic Black, have a modern design that stands out in bedrooms while being a great accent to existing design elements.

Themed Nurseries

Lastly, if you want to transform your nursery into its own world, the best way to do that is by giving it a theme! In 2021 the most popular nursery themes were Outer Space, Safari, Soft & Layered Textures, Lavender, Mauve, & Blush Walls, and more! For instance, a Safari or Western-themed baby room is perfect for incorporating playful, daring design and interactive toys! Our The Rip, Weathered Barn Metal, or Cattleman finishes would be the top choices for a Safari-themed room. All three fan finishes offer the right amount of speed, stimulation, and custom design.

A Rustic Western-themed baby room happens to be one of our favorite nursery design trends! This theme is super successful when done with rich hues like emerald greens, shades of terracotta, rust, or bold blues. We anticipate seeing many more nursery designs with jewel-like or earthy tones that give the space a sense of rejuvenation.

We love seeing parents turn to nontraditional colors to liven up the baby’s room! Our Texas Turquoise windmill ceiling fans would go great in this space. Or Cattleman fan with its dark-tipped blades, this fan offers the perfect amount of western charm and grit.

With a Rustic Western theme, you can go in so many directions, adding subtle western-themed art and decor accents on the walls, mobile, and furniture. All these elements make your nursery calm and cozy for you and your baby. And the BEST part is this nursery theme is broad and versatile enough that it can grow and change with your child over time. You can add fun cactus, rodeo sheets, and bedding as your child changes!

Determine A Color Palette

Now that you have a clean, clear, organized space and a theme choosing your colors for the nursery will be a breeze! When selecting a color palette, remember that visual stimulation is paramount for your infant. Having a color combination of rich hues and colors that contrast makes for a great design. Think light yellow and a cool green, a good balance of personality, brightness, and good contrast!

If you want the space to work for your child as they grow, you may consider going with neutrals or one primary color for the walls and adding accents of prints and designs with furniture, pillows, rugs, etc.

Painting the walls or including unique pieces like a custom Windmill Ceiling Fan are exciting ways to add style and functional art to your home.

At the end of the day, their mobile isn’t the only thing your infant will be staring at while in their crib – give them a custom, handcrafted, rustic windmill ceiling fan to look at too!

Bringing It ALL Together

Once you’ve determined your style, brought in furniture, and prepared for your new arrival, it’s time to add those finishing touches to your baby’s nursery.

If you haven’t already, bring in some small space decorations, such as floating shelves, mobiles, and curtains, to bring the space together and make it feel warm and cozy. And if you need some additional lighting in the room, choose a nursery ceiling fan with a light to make the space even more functional.

The Windmill Ceiling Fan is reminiscent of the old farm-style windmills, incorporating a large diameter and strong blades to create a surprisingly efficient and delightfully inexpensive product. These fans can be silver-colored and galvanized, with a weathered look, powder-coated, oil-rubbed bronze, rustic copper, tarnished tin, and more.

Our fans are hand-cut, hand-assembled, and hand-packaged at our warehouse in Pilot Point, Texas. Each fan’s last nook and cranny, right down to the lightweight aluminum custom finish, is made to suit each order. On top of that, we deliver a one-of-a-kind look, feel, and unrivaled strength and craftsmanship.
