Here are 5 ways to prepare your home for the fall season — because, yes, the dog days of summer are almost over!

  1. Clean the outside living area — Dirt, grime, water stains, pet droppings, etc., can pile up in a hurry on neglected outside living areas like covered patios and porches. After all, it’s been so hot outside that most people aren’t on the patio as much. And even if you have braved the heat, everything could still stand a good clean-up. Clean those seat cushions, power wash the decking and concrete, and make sure the furniture is in good condition. You’ll be glad you took the time to tidy everything up once fall hits, and you can start hanging around outside again.
  2. Plan for hot and cold weather — While fall temperatures are far more bearable, we will still have our hotter and cooler than average days. So make sure to install a damp-rated windmill ceiling fan for that patio or porch. They can be mounted in areas with no direct exposure to water, rain, or snow but can handle their fair share of moisture in damp places and keep the air circulating in that area for years to come. All of our fans are damp-rated. See our selection here.
  3. Check your smoke detectors — It’s easy to overlook them unless they are beeping at us. But since you’ll likely be using the fireplace, now is a great time to replace the batteries, clean them off, and do a quick test to ensure they’re in working order. If they aren’t, consider replacing them.
  4. Remove warm clothes and decorations from storage — This is the fun part! Who doesn’t enjoy wrapping themselves up in that comfy blanket in front of the fire or wearing their favorite oversized sweatshirt? Who isn’t looking forward to breaking out the fall-colored decorations? So have at it, folks! Now is the time to pull stuff from the attic or closet shelf. So you’re prepared for the fall season ahead!
  5. Reverse the direction of your ceiling fan — Remember, your fan spins both ways. If you flip the switch so that the blades turn clockwise during the fall, you’ll create an updraft that draws cool air up toward the fan versus to the ground. This is a great way to utilize your windmill ceiling fan year-round — regardless of how hot or cold, it is outside.
